CES 2009: LG Objet AMOLED 15-inch TV first look

These prototypes are less than an inch thick and have amazing contrast ratio, but they probably won't be cheap.

LG announced that it's releasing 15-inch active-matrix OLED TVs this June, and we took a look at a similar AMOLED prototype on the show floor at the Consumer Electronics Show. They're paper-thin and razor-sharp; at only 0.83 inches thick, they've got a 720p-friendly display resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels.

We weren't able to play with the settings, but we did talk to some LG representatives for a few minutes, and they told us that the display should live for about 20,000 hours before dying down. One of the problems with OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology is that the organic materials used to display the image have a short shelf life relative to what's used in LCD or Plasma TVs, but it sounds like they're making good progress.

We were particularly impressed with the contrast ratio of these displays: the blacks were as deep as you could ask for and the bright colors were lively. These probably won't be cheap, and the tiny size means they're only good for a bedroom or kitchen (if even that), but if you want to impress your friends, we're positive this'll do it. Check out close-up picture after the break.

LG actually said that they will only make these in June if they find customers. Apparently they are looking to embed this in laptops or other devices and not sell as TV (They do not want a high-price product like Sony's XEL-1) :
