Apple CEO Steve Jobs has released a letter to the Apple community in the form of an official Apple press release addressing recent speculation about his health and rumors surrounding the lack of a Steve Jobs keynote at this year's Macworld. In the letter, he reveals that he's discovered that his weight loss over the course of 2008 was due to a hormone imbalance that was depriving his body of proper nutrients. He is now undergoing treatment for the imbalance and says that just as he slowly lost the weight, the treatment will result in a slow regaining of his weight. Jobs will remain Apple's CEO throughout the treatment and finished the letter noting:

I have given more than my all to Apple for the past 11 years now. I will be the first one to step up and tell our Board of Directors if I can no longer continue to fulfill my duties as Apple’s CEO. I hope the Apple community will support me in my recovery and know that I will always put what is best for Apple first.

So now I’ve said more than I wanted to say, and all that I am going to say, about this.

Although the letter paints this health problem as unrelated to Macworld, several online sources are taking this as an admission that Jobs is missing Macworld due to health reasons.

The more likely reason for Jobs missing Macworld is the one that Apple has stated publicly: Apple is no longer interested in participating in the Macworld conference after this year as it has more success with its own press events where Apple can release new products according to Apple's schedule.

UPDATE: Apple's Board of Directors have released another press release following shortly upon Jobs' letter, stating in part:

As we have said before, if there ever comes a day when Steve wants to retire or for other reasons cannot continue to fulfill his duties as Apple’s CEO, you will know it.

Apple is very lucky to have Steve as its leader and CEO, and he deserves our complete and unwavering support during his recuperation. He most certainly has that from Apple and its Board.

Obsessable's summary translation of this second letter: "Everyone chill out. Jobs is okay and we're not thinking of replacing him anytime soon."

To Steve Jobs:

This may come accross as crazzy I don't know any other way to say it: I am a psychic healer and you need one for your cancer, even if you go to someone else it's Ok. When all else fails - please call me. It's free. I do not charge for the service. I hope this does not destress you. I'm sincere.
