Samsung LUXIA LED LCD TVs to be only 6.5 millimeters thick

It looks like LG, which recently announced plans to show off a 24.8-millimeter-thick LCD TV at this year's CES, has some stiff competition in store for it, as Samsung's lined up to demo LUXIA LCD screens down to 6.5 millimeters thick. Like LG's, Samsung's screen owes most of its slim build to LED backlights, which take up only a fraction of the space used by traditional LCD illumination.
Just like the LG model, Samsung's thin TV will feature an interpolated 240 Hz scanning mode for theoretically smoother motion. The LUXIA models on display at the CES should include 40-inch and 55-inch sets. There's no word yet on some of the models' more pertinent details, such as contrast ratio, but hopefully Samsung will let some of those slip to reporters during the expo. We also can't say if these LUXIA screens are being fast-tracked for consumer production or are just the kind of technological demo models used to draw attention at these trade shows. Samsung certainly has our attention, at least, and we'll update you with more on the sets as we hear it.
