HP gave a sneak preview of its prototype Firefly gaming laptop, not officially going on display until next week's CES. Designed by Voodoo, the laptop features a secondary LCD screen, similar to that in the Fujitsu LifeBook N7010. Unlike the Fujitsu's, Firefly's secondary screen is directly below the main 17.1-inch 1920 x 1200 display, instead of on the laptop's bottom half, perched above the keyboard. There's also no indication that the 4.3-inch 800 x 480 mini-screen has any touch input like Fujitsu's.

Rather than place the traditional trackpad below the keyboard, the Firefly opts for a larger pad situated directly to the right - unfortunate for left-handed users. The pad recognizes multi-touch inputs, giving you control similar to what's available in the latest Apple laptops.

As a gaming-focused laptop, the Firefly packs some serious CPU and GPU muscle, running a quad-core 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme and sporting a pair of ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870s for graphics support. Combined with the system's 4GB of memory and DirectX 10 compatibility, it should handle resource-intensive games pretty easily.

Rounding out the package are some fun extras, like the ability to easily overclock the CPU and an adjustable backlit keyboard. The system's webcam supports an infrared night-vision mode for use in low-light environments. Hopefully HP will give some insight into its plans for bringing the Firefly to market after its CES debut.
