Apple planning 7-inch, iPod touch-like tablet PC, say insiders

TechCrunch blogger Michael Arrington claims to have heard from "three independent sources close to Apple" that the company has plans to release an iPod touch-like device with a 7 or 9-inch screen in late 2009. This rumor refuses to die, but the product never seems to come. Arrington claims one of his sources has actually handled this tablet Mac (for lack of a better term).

Rumors of an Apple netbook have been shot down, but this slightly different concept seems more plausible. Supposedly, the device would connect to the App Store currently used by the iPhone and the iPod touch, allowing you to download a variety of programs optimized for its touchscreen interface. There's no guarantee Apple will actually go through with its plan to release this thing, but it could be quite a novelty. Would you find this surely-expensive computer more attractive than a cheaper and more functional — but admittedly less stylish — netbook, though?

One of my sources, who has proven reliable with tips in the past, has sworn that such a device exists with a 7-inch screen and that he's actually held the device. Of course, he's been claiming this for several years and has been telling me that it's sure to come out soon that entire time.
