LaCie is releasing one of the largest network-attached storage solutions we've yet seen, the six-terabyte Ethernet Disk. That's a staggering amount of storage, equivalent to just about 700 full-length double-layer DVDs. If you're not willing to sink the $1,500 LaCie's asking for the 6TB model, the Ethernet Disk is also available in a $1,100 4TB model and a $750 2TB version.

Like the rest of LaCie's NAS drives, the Ethernet Disk has a ton of interfaces for getting at your data. It supports gigabit Ethernet to keep transfer times low for even the largest files. In addition to offering standard SMB shares, the drive has a built-in FTP and web server for connecting to it from across the internet. Apple users will be happy to see that LaCie has included support for Time Machine, letting you keep up-to-date backups of all your important files.

The one thing — besides the price tag, that is — that might give you second thoughts about adopting the Ethernet Disk for your NAS needs is that the drive is in a rack-mountable configuration, a pizza-box-like form factor. Devices like this are designed for installation in server rooms, attached to a standardized rack system to hold them in place. There's nothing about the drive, though, that requires you to mount it in such a way; it will work just fine sitting out on its own, and LaCie includes rubber feet to make it look more like a stand-alone component. If you're looking to future-proof your storage needs with more disk space than you could fill in a good, long while, the Ethernet Disk is available now.
