Early this morning in Tokyo, Toshiba announced the industry's first 512GB solid state 2.5-inch drive based on 43-nanometer NAND flash memory. The drives are expected to begin mass production in Q2 2009, although no pricing has yet been mentioned. Alongside the 512GB SSD drive, Toshiba also announced SSDs in the same 43nm NAND family in 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB sizes and available in either 1.8-inch or 2.5-inch drive enclosures. A 512GB SSD drive in your laptop would weigh far less than traditional hard drives, consume less power than traditional hard drives, and work faster, but chances are that these first models are going to be on the pricey side.
