Social networking website Facebook has so far been a smashing success. It's already defeated the once-de-facto king MySpace, and more people are signing up for the service every day. How many more? At least 600,000, and maybe even as many as 700,000 according to Inside Facebook. Silicon Alley Insider notes that this means Facebook is a "Boston-sized population" each day. Currently, the total population stands at 140 million.
Point is, if you're looking to find people, Facebook's a good bet. The United States-based site (it started at Harvard) naturally rose to prominence in its home country first, but about 70% of the new users live in other countries, so it's achieving international appeal that it didn't have before. It's not just for college students anymore, either; most of the new members are over 25.
People are using the site more in their everyday lives, too. 13 million users update their statuses at least once a day to let their friends know what's going on, and 700 million photos are uploaded every month.
