The iPhone Dev-Team just announced that they have a working unlock for the iPhone 3G, which they have cutely codenamed "yellowsn0w" and are targeting for a New Year's 2009 release for everyone to use. This unlock will be packaged in a friendly application skin like the one pictured above and allow you to unlock your iPhone 3G so that it can be used with other SIM cards from other cellular networks besides AT&T. Their post also notes that the recent OS X 10.5.6 update has caused some people to be unable to put their iPhones into DFU mode, which is necessary both for jailbreaking and unlocking the phone, so if you have already updated to OS X 10.5.6 it may cause some problems for your unlocking plans. The Dev-Team also offer several possible workarounds for the problem, which they think is a kernel bug introduced by Apple rather than a conscious move to try to prevent jailbreaking and unlocking, but they caution in bold to try these fixes at your own risk.
