The McCain-Palin campaign headquarters was embroiled in a bit of a technological gaffe recently as they sold off used office inventory in Arlington, VA. Campaign staffers apparently neglected to first wipe the data from a batch of used BlackBerries they were selling off for $20 apiece, inadvertently creating a hot story for Fox News who snagged a phone with over 50 confidential phone numbers of campaign leaders, lobbyists, politicians and other journalists. Also discovered remaining on the phone were hundreds of emails sent during the campaign and up to several days after election night, revealing an insider's look at how campaign operations work. When confronted with the information leak, representatives of the McCain-Palin campaign were quoted as saying “it was an unfortunate staff error and procedures are being put in place to ensure all information is secure.” Let this serve as a lesson about the consequences of getting rid of your used devices without carefully considering the data that might be on them — particularly if you've just run a presidential campaign.
