Nintendo has made a deal with Harper Collins publishers to release 100 classic literary titles on a Nintendo DS game cartridge. Although there has been a homebrew ebook application, dslibris, available for the DS since last year, and although the 100 classic titles are all out of copyright and therefore available freely via ebook sites like Project Gutenberg, some are saying that this partnership between Harper Collins and Nintendo could be the beginnings of the Nintendo DS becoming a viable ebook reader platform. With over 24.6 million Nintendo DS portable gaming consoles sold in the U.S. since the device's launch and given the comparatively low price of the Nintendo DS, widespread availability of published ebooks that can be purchased or downloaded to the device could threaten sales of e-ink based portable ebook readers like the Amazon Kindle and the Sony Portable Reader.
