Today, Novatel Wireless has announced the Novatel MiFi, a credit-card sized mobile router that will share a 3G wireless connection over WiFi to nearby devices without the need of a separate wireless modem. The MiFi has a built-in battery that according to Novatel will power an active connection for about four hours, which would seem adequate as it is longer than the typical laptop battery will last. The device is slated for arrival in early 2009, although no pricing has yet been announced.

If you're wondering why such a device matters or why you might want one, you could easily set this diminutive router up for mobile broadband connectivity not just for yourself, but to be shared with your family on a road trip. It would also be useful as backup internet connectivity while traveling with others or when you and your team are about to give a presentation in a location where the provided internet connection is less than stellar. If you're not one for sharing, however, a simple USB 3G wireless modem will probably serve you well. Keep in mind that both the MiFi and any standalone 3G connectivity solution will come with a monthly fee in the $50-60 range and most likely with a 2-year contract.
