Mobile phone manufacturers are getting a bunch of new options for their devices, first with LG's 4G chipset, and now with Broadcom introducing its wireless 802.11n solution. Most of the mobile phones that support WiFi today top out at 802.11g, with 802.11n offering superior speeds, up to 50Mbps. While n has yet to become a formalized standard, there are plenty of what's known as "draft-n" devices, routers and wireless cards that are jumping the gun on the technology to take advantage of its performance today.

Broadcom's new chip, called the BCM4329, is an all-in-one package offering this high-speed WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 with enhanced data rate, and both FM reception and a transmitter for sending music to a nearby radio. Packing these features together should make the chip attractive for phone developers, though none have yet announced they'll be using the solution.

The big draw for users should be the increased ease of getting your files on and off your phone. With plenty of media-friendly phones out there with lots of flash storage, more and more users are stuck either using slower WiFi to move songs and videos to their handsets, or forced to carry around a USB cord or a microSD USB adapter. This sort of 802.11n package should help speed up those wireless transfers to a level closer to that of a wired connection.
