If you buy a new computer from computer manufacturer Dell's online store today, you'll have to pay a lot extra for the old Windows if you want it. Dell seems to be keen on having users finally leave behind Windows XP in favor of Windows Vista; a while back it began charging $20 extra to install the old operating system in computers sold through its online store, but over the past few months that's risen to $150. Dell might be doing this because of pressure from Microsoft but it's just as likely that it's phasing out XP to save time and money. Vista and XP behave very differently than one another in some ways, so it's best to only have to worry about one when training customer support personnel.

Microsoft's products are becoming less and less attractive every day. Dell lost me with the exploding laptops thing.

Uh, your XP pricing depends on the BUID that it's purchased under.
For Small Businesses and Corporate group purchases (read: Latitude, OptiPlex Vostro, Precision)...
XP usually floats around $99.
Latitudes and Vostros, right now, for example, are $99 for XP on each.
Same thing for OptiPlex.
Precision Workstation desktops and notebooks? Business as usual. Pick Vista or Pick XP, same price.
Home users (Inspiron, Dimension, XPS) shouldn't be getting XP at this point unless it's on the Mini 9, but I'm willing to sample my hat as part of my diet to be wrong here.
