Rapid changes in technology affect all of our lives, and not just by giving us fancy new gadgets. Sometimes there's a human cost. AT&T announced today that it's cutting 12,000 jobs, or approximately 4% of its workforce. The decision was made partly because of the less-than-ideal economic climate, but also because consumer demand is leading the company away from old staples like its land line telephone business to new frontiers such as broadband, video, and cellular networks. Meanwhile, it said it will actually be staffing up in those more modern businesses and that it will hand out over $600 million in severence pay.
