Pioneer made an appearance at this year's IT Month Fair in Taipei, where it exhibited a prototype of a 16-layer Blu-ray disc that can store 400GB of data, about eight times as much as the discs on sale today. According to Digitimes, the invention was possible because of a breakthrough in material of reflective layers. The most impressive bit: Pioneer says it can be read by any old Blu-ray player, so no new hardware would be required. However, it's a fair guess that the discs themselves would be very expensive. The company expects to begin selling read-only discs in 2010, and ones that store up to a terabyte in 2013.
