Netgear's Digital Entertainer Elite EVA9000 has been spotted in documents filed with the FCC, showing off the set-top media player. More like the Apple TV than a straight Media Center Extender device, thanks to the option for installing an internal SATA hard drive, the EVA9000 will play nearly every video file format under the sun from either local storage or streamed over the network with Ethernet or WiFi. Like the WD TV HD Media Player, Netgear's player supports MKV files, in addition to decoding raw high definition MPEG2 transport streams. Of course, the device will still handle all your standard XviD, WMV, MOV, and MP4 files without a hitch. Unlike the WD TV HD, the EVA9000 has component outputs in addition to an HDMI port, making it compatible with older HDTVs. Surprising to find on a device filed with the FCC, ostensibly for American release, is Netgear's inclusion of an SCART port, a video connector widely found in Europe with near-inexistent US support. There's no word yet on price or a release date.
