Amazon Kindle sold out, new stocks due in three months

If you were hoping to pick up one of Amazon's Kindle ebook readers for the holidays you're out of luck, as the company's latest manufacturing run is already depleted. If you try to place an order for one of the devices now, you're going to be stuck with a three-month wait. The Kindle sold out this time last year as well, which Amazon should have been prepared to avoid a repeat of, but bloggers are speculating that Oprah's recent endorsement of the product drove sales past expected levels. Amazon is currently taking orders for the reader, reserving units out of the next shipment. Sellers of used Kindles on Amazon are already lined up to gouge desperate customers, offering the unit for between $800 and $1500.

Another choice for those who do want a Kindle is to get a refurbished unit. As I reported on my blog, these are $329 and currently in stock. Same warranty as a new one (and many are probably unopened ones, refused delivery when people had to double order to get the Oprah coupon to work).
