Hewlett-Packard's Mini 1000 netbook apparently has a secret 3G cellular modem, enabled with a simple software installation. The computer doesn't officially support 3G networking, though reports of HP talking to cellular carriers about subsidizing service hinted towards, at the least, a future 3G upgrade. A curious Mini owner, after numerous phone calls to HP, posted to a netbooks forum a two-step process for enabling 3G in current Mini 1000 models. Apparently all you have to do is install HP software drivers for the WWAN chipset, then power-down and insert a valid SIM card into an unlabeled slot in the battery compartment. It's not clear if this functionality is present in all Minis, or only for certain hardware configurations. If you've got one of the netbooks, and feel like trying it out, let us know if you find any success in the comments below.
