Yesterday, people who signed up for the early preview got an early look at the New Xbox Experience (NXE) and as of 2am this morning, the update has been available for all Xbox 360 owners. We here at Obsessable labs downloaded the upgrade this morning and have been kicking its tires a bit. Currently, there appear to be some problems with the Netflix integration (which is one of the new hot features of the upgrade). Trying to access the Netflix section on the Xbox 360 is returning an error that says: "Can't retrieve information from Xbox LIVE. Please try again later. Status code: 8007000e." Most likely this is a first day launch error where more people are trying to access the feature at once than would occur under normal Xbox Live network activity. This problem seems to be happening for everything appearing under the Video Marketplace section of the NXE. Even when the issue is resolved, the usefulness of the Netflix subscription has been crippled somewhat by Sony Pictures deciding to pull all their content from the offerings last minute. UPDATE: Thanks to Shaun in the comments below who notes that the 8007000e error occurs because you have to turn off the Xbox and restart it after the initial NXE installation to get the option to download the Netflix application.
Upon installation of the NXE, you are greeted with a new intro video at boot up (which is embedded via YouTube below). Then after signing into Xbox Live and agreeing to the terms of service, you are taken to a screen where you can design a new avatar for yourself. You can browse through your friends and see their avatars and some graphics associated with what games they have been playing recently. Browsing through your own gaming history is much more interesting in the NXE, as well, because all your games show up as cards with your different accomplishments noted, and you can easily toggle through all of them. Some games, like UNO, can now be played with your NXE avatar.
This new friendlier, avatar-rich interface for the Xbox 360 is clearly an attempt by Microsoft to compete with the top-selling Nintendo Wii which relies heavily on an avatar-based system where players design their own Mii characters. So far, from just toying around with the NXE for about 20 minutes, the update would appear to be a great improvement in ease of navigation for all Xbox 360 owners with useful added features like the Netflix streaming; hopefully, over the next several days post launch of this update, Microsoft will stabilize the system so that Xbox Live customers can actually take advantage of these new multimedia features.
UPDATE: We've decided to celebrate the launch of the NXE by giving away an Xbox 360 Live Vision Camera to a randomly chosen winner. The contest launches now and will last until this Friday at 10am ET. The winner will be announced at noon on Friday. You must be a U.S. resident and 18 years or older to enter. Enter in the form below.

NetFlix pulled out, so no NetFlix for 360

This is incorrect. I have the Netflix loaded and watching it on the 360 right now. What happened was Sony Pictures pulled their content from the Watch Now section of Netflix so all those Sony titles won't show on Xbox 360.

You have to shut off your Xbox360 and turn it back on before you can download the Netflix application.

Thanks, Shaun for spotting this solution. I've updated the post and linked to your comment!

Restarting fixed Netflix, but I'm still getting the error with some of the other items in the Video Marketplace section. Also, the NXE just froze on me and I had to force the Xbox to power down.

I think I'll be holding off on this upgrade for a while. I'm pretty dissapointed with the direction MS is taking with the UI - look at all that wasted screen real estate. And frankly, the avatars are just silly. The game-caching looks interesting, so someday I may download the NXE for that, but I'm in no rush to fix what isn't broken.

It was really quick for me, but that was at about 7am ET.
Barb Dybwad (1:53 PM on Wed Nov 19, 2008)
Pretty quick for me too, only took 5 minutes or so around 11am EST. Is your internet connection working ok for other devices?
Anonymous (2:51 PM on Wed Nov 19, 2008)
My internet works fine for other devices, but since i've been trying to download nxe it disconnects me from xbox live every 15 minutes or so, it's very frustrating.I don't know why it's taking so long.
CHIEFWU (1:52 PM on Wed Nov 19, 2008)

Nice....I upgraded and now my console won't start, three red lights are flashing around the power button and that is all that is happening.......wtg...Microsoft!!!
C.K. Sample III (8:50 AM on Thu Nov 20, 2008)
Mine gave me the red lights and I thought I had the Red Ring of Death, but it was just that the cable in back had come loose. So double check your cable. If that doesn't work, all you have to do, assuming that your Xbox has never been cracked open or tampered with in any way that would void your warranty, is contact Microsoft, and they'll ship you a box to send the Xbox to them for repair or replacement. Just send the console itself without any cables or the hard drive though. Here's a link with details:

Good luck!

You know that you can download your games into your hard drive right?
C.K. Sample III (8:51 AM on Thu Nov 20, 2008)
Yeah, now I need a larger hard drive!
Bloodyjudge (7:02 AM on Thu Nov 20, 2008)
3 red lights means internal heating error.....either X-clamp fix or erasers under the ram chips...either that or RISK sending it to microsoft and getting someones old refurb console(if they flashed it you could be banned from live)and it wont be your fault......screw the warrenty!!!!its not worth the paper its not printed on..
Ive fixed over 30 xboxes with these methods..
NXE looks pretty good but all in all still have some way to catch up when ps3(home) comes out

Don't even bother with an xbox throw that junk away ive just spent hte last 2 months dealing with xbox supports' impossible phone reps this is the worst service i've ever received and they dont ship to military addresses either, what a joke. I wrote about my person experience at http://www.wwwyatt.com/my-xbox360-horror-story/ if you care to read about it before you make any purchases

No comparisons here. But LIVE NXE is like a New bettle compared to a HUGE Hummer. I am testing HOME 1.0 right now and it just WOW ! It's very, very, VERY promissing ! Tons of people alread online talking, playing. It's just plain nice ! :)

I updated for the second time since I bought the thing a year ago. After creating an avitar I powered off the system and went to bed. Came home from work and the damn thing is giving me the rrod. I contacted the customer service and was told that the two were not related. I call BS!!!

GOT MY SON 360 ELITE ON THE 15/11/07 FOR HIS CHRISTMAS,THE MACHINE HAS WORKED REALLY GOOD UP UNTIL I SET IT UP LIVE FOR HIM AND GOT THE NEW UPDATE FOR THIS NXE,NOW IT SHUTS DOWN AND TWO RED LIGHTS ARE ON. HAVE CALLED THE SUPPORT TEAM AND WHAT A JOKE THAT WAS. THEY TOLD ME THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE IT FIXED AS THE YEARS WARRENTY HAD JUST ENDED AND THAT THE EXTENDED 3 YEAR DOES NOT APPLY TO 2 RED IGHTS, THEY ALSOTOLD ME THAT THE NEW UPDATE HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS PROBLEM WHICH I FIND HARD TO BLIEVE AS IT WORKED FINE BEFORE HE GOT THIS. I KNOW THAT LOTS OF PEOPLE OUT THERE ARE IN THE SAME SITUATION BUT I THINK IT IS TERRIBLE THAT MICROSOFT CAN TREAT PEOPLE LIKE THS AS ITS THERE FAULT THIS HAS HAPPENED. SO NOW MY SON HAS NO GAME CONSOLE AND WEE FEEL SO HURT TO SEE HIM LIKE THIS. [ SHAME N YOU MICROSOFT SHAME ON YOU]
JOSEPH DOUGLAS (10:51 AM on Mon Dec 15, 2008)
HAVE HAD SO MUCH HASLE WITH CUSTOMER SUPPORT THAT WEE NOW ARE GOING TO CHANGE OVER TO THE PS3, SO MICROSOFT HAS NOW LOST ANOTHER LOYAL CUSTOMER, SO ITS THERE LOSS AND I HOPE THAT ALOT OF PEOPLE SHOULD DO THE SAME AND MAKE THEM SUFFER RATHER THAN ALL OFF US FOR A CHANGE. AND AS FOR THE SUPPORT TEAM YOU CANT UNDERTAND HALF THE THINGS THEY R SAYINY TO YOU.
