Microsoft has announced that they plan to do away with their subscription-based security software and instead offer a new free anti-virus solution for Windows in late 2009, currently dubbed Morro. Such a move could severely undercut the sales and offerings of current free and paid-for anti-virus solutions for Windows and, as evidenced by some of the conversations below, some are concerned that this move will create an anti-virus "monoculture" that would be more at risk of overlooking vulnerabilities due to a lack of competition in the space.
