Originally appearing back in September as an email-only device, the $80 Peek portable emailing gadget just received a new firmware update that may make it more appealing for a lot of users. You can now send unlimited text messages and view pictures in PNG, GIF, JPEG, and BMP. The Peek requires a no contract $20 per month service cost in addition to the initial purchase price, making the device an unlikely choice if you already own a smartphone and pay a monthly data fee.

That being said, if Peek keeps adding cool unlimited features to this $20 a month device, it could become more and more appealing to power users. If they were to add a browser and a built-in camera, the Peek would be a nice everything-but-the-phone mobile solution for a very reasonable monthly fee.
