Religious types are looking forward to the advent of one savior this holiday season, but movie studio executives have a different miracle in mind: they're hoping sales of Blu-ray players and films will pick up enough to counteract the declining home video market in the US. The economy bears much of the blame for a 3 to 4 percent dropoff in home video sales thus far in 2008, but Hollywood is praying for a surge in holiday sales of Sony's PlayStation 3 console and other standalone Blu-ray players to prevent any further acceleration of the decline. With prices for the latter having fallen to less than $200 on the low end of the spectrum, it's not entirely a pipe dream — however to meet the projected goals set by The Digital Entertainment Group, manufacturers will have to move 2.3 million more PS3s and 1 million standalone players by year's end.
