Microsoft is entering the online software distribution game with the launch of the aptly-named Microsoft Store. The site offers standard versions of every title, on disc and shipped through the mail, but many software products have instant buy-and-download options as well. That ability is currently restricted to copies of the operating system, Office packages, and a few productivity titles - none of the games for sale are available as downloads. In addition to software titles, the site features Microsoft's collection of input devices, Zune models, and 360 consoles for sale.

Although the idea of a download store sounds great if you need a product quickly, and the fact that Microsoft will let you re-download your copy until it cuts off support for the title is a nice bonus, the prices just can't compete: Microsoft charges $130 for a download of Vista Home Premium upgrade while the title's available on Amazon for just $83.
