According to rumor site Apple Insider, Apple may be planning a redesigned MacBook Air featuring a carbon-fiber bottom shell to lighten the ultra-thin MacBook to under three pounds. Although the main shell of the MacBook Air would remain aluminum, the bottom shell and certain structural components would be replaced with lighter carbon-fiber.

Although there is no official word from Apple on the topic, the move to make the MacBook Air even lighter would help differentiate it more from the recent upgrade of Apple's new entry level aluminum MacBook that features a more powerful and complete feature set than the Air at a weight that is still only four-and-a-half pounds.
