2Wire is working on developing a set-top box solution with yet-unnamed content providers. The MediaPoint digital media player the company announced supports SDTV and HDTV with HDMI and component outputs, does WiFi in addition to wired Ethernet, and supports both internal storage and USB expansion. The reason those specs are a tad nebulous, with no mention of media formats or storage size options, is that 2Wire isn't selling the MediaPoint to consumers, but to content delivery companies, like cable and broadband providers, who can then customize the box and release it with their own branding. There's no final word yet on interested companies, but regardless of which steps up to bring a MediaPoint device to market, it will most likely combine remote streaming with local media access, as the 2Wire software supports UPnP and DLNA for home media sharing. Rumors point to the first announced device coming out in the next few weeks.
