Major flash memory manufacturer SanDisk has announced a new file management system to accelerate system access to solid-state flash-based drives. Dubbed ExtremeFFS, the system places files wherever it can most quickly write them at the time of the request, possible because the file fragmentation problems experienced with hard disk drives aren't as big an issue with flash memory. In theory, SanDisk says the system can deliver a write speed improvement of up to 100 times over current SSDs. The company also claims the system "learns" how users store and access certain types of files, letting the drive optimize itself for higher performance over time, but did not go into detail on the technology. SanDisk expects to start shipping drives using ExtremeFFS in 2009.
