There are two gadgets I can't live without. One is my iPhone - but that's been covered extensively by every site and every staff around. For the purposes of the contest, it's a first gen, jailbroken and unlocked model running on a Pay as I go SIM card so I get unlimited Internet access for $20 a month. Details at one of my blogs.

The other gadget I love is my Canary Wireless Wifi finder. It allows me to go Wijacking ANYWHERE because it lists all wifi signals around me, tells me if they're open or locked and gives me signal strength. The unit takes two AAA batteries and is as big as a two pieces of nigiri sitting beside each other or maybe as large as a double-thick matchbook. Definitely smaller than a White Castle burger, a hockey puck, or a cell phone. Actually about the size of a car remote, just a little thicker.

Cost me about $60 a year ago. It's FANTASTIC.

Hey Jeff, make sure you enter this in the form above as well, otherwise it doesn't count. Cheers!

i cannot enter this contest because i live in canada, not the us. but i thought i would comment anyway because it made me think. i love my macbook. but probably more than anything i love my dslr camera. i have a nikon d80, but i am not promoting a nikon over any other brand. it is just what i am comfortable with.

my camera makes me happier than any other gadget i have. it allows me to express myself in ways that nothing else can. it allows me to see things in a different way. it allows me to escape in a way that is creative. in the middle of a large city, i can find the bits of nature that can touch your soul, give you energy to carry on. when i am in the woods near our cottage, i am transformed and transported.

good luck with the contest. as i said, it made me think about the gadgets i use. i'm sure it will do the same for many.

Hmmm, it'd be nice if the comments jacked right into the entries.

What the Diamond means to me?
Keeps me connected.

Sufficient?

Are there restrictions on what counts as a gadget for the purposes of this contest? Does it have to be electronic?

Reply
C.K. Sample III external link (12:55 PM on Wed Nov 5, 2008)

Nope, Neil. No restrictions on gadget, unless you try to pull something crazy like calling cake a gadget. If your favorite gadget is a spork b/c it works like a spoon and a fork combined, I think that's still fine, even though it isn't letter of the law a gadget.

Is it too late to change my entry to a spork?

Hah! Well, we do only accept one entry per person, but feel free to explain how you would've chosen spork here in the comments. ;-)

My favorite gadget -- this is tough -- but right now, I would have to pick my 32 GB iPod Touch. It isn't the best iPod I have ever owned (that's the 60 GB Black 5G), but it is the snazziest. I'm too AT&T and touch-screen typing averse to go iPhone full time, but the Touch is just awesome. The screen is gorgeous, the sound quality is excellent (I'm using nice headphones) and the App Store has so many cool games and programs. It's totally my new crack. Juggling the Touch, my BlackBerry Curve and the T-Mobile G1 around the last few weeks has affirmed my love of my BlackBerry (as a phone and as an e-mail device it is the best), but also affirmed that no matter how cool Android might be, it isn't the iPhone OS and Cocoa Touch flat out kicks Java's ass!

My favorite gadget is my twenty-three-year-old Swiss Army knife. It's a Tinkerer model, so it has a Philips head screwdriver instead of a corkscrew. It's become such a part of me that I assume everyone has one and am always near-dumbstruck when the need arises for one of the tools this old-school gadget has and I find that I'm the only one carrying one. I've driven cross-country to avoid having to leave it behind due to TSA restrictions on what I can carry, which I suppose could be deemed obsessive...

Excellent contest guys! I have to say, I'm in love with my new G1 so far -- Although I'm going to switch it out for the black one. Good luck on your future contests and congrats to Kestrel's A for winning!
