The FCC will vote next week on Verizon's proposed acquisition of Alltel, a move that would make the company the largest wireless provider in the US, with around 78 million subscribers. The Department of Justice has outlined rules for the merger that aim to reduce the monopolistic aspect of the acquisition by requiring Verizon to sell some of its assets. The company agreed to offload certain holdings in 22 states to competitors, though the move will still be a huge boon to Verizon, bringing in a net growth of eight million customers. Critics of the merger are citing concerns that Verizon won't be as accommodating in roaming agreements with other providers as Alltel was.
