Opera: Apple says no to competing browsers on iPhone

Browser developer Opera revealed that it has an iPhone version of its Opera Mini software ready to go, but Apple won't have any of it. Opera Mini doesn't connect to web sites directly, but uses a remote server to access the page and compress it before sending it to a mobile device, saving bandwidth and speeding page rendering times. Apple gets last say on which apps it will and won't sell in the iPhone apps store, and apparently won't be permitting software that competes with built-in iPhone programs. That seems a bit insecure of Apple, as it wouldn't be losing any browser sales in allowing users to download Opera in addition to Safari, only risk losing face if another company's browser did a better job than its own.
