AT&T free iPhone Wi-Fi hotspot access

AT&T offered free WiFi connectivity to AT&T WiFi hotspots briefly a while back, but then it disappeared. Today, however, thousands of AT&T iPhone owners received a text message notifying them that "your Apple iPhone now has free AT&T Wi-Fi access at thousands of hotspots nationwide, including Starbucks*." For more details about the new free WiFi access and to find out what the * in the text message is pointing to, you can visit www.att.com/attwifi.

Next time you are near an AT&T WiFi hotspot, all you'll have to do is turn on your WiFi connection on your iPhone, select the AT&T WiFi connection, then launch Safari on your iPhone, and you'll be prompted to enter your phone number and agree to the terms of service to connect.

I was very happy about this myself until I noticed the older text message above it noting that AT&T is also raising the cost of text messages from $0.10 per message to $0.20 per message starting November 12, 2008. Perhaps the added cost of text messages is a tax to pay for the free Wi-Fi? Tell us what you think in the comments below.
