Access, the company that bought out PalmSource, has just released a successor to the Palm OS: Access Linux Platform 3.0. As a glance at the conversations below will tell you, there's some mixed response to this news. Should ALP 3.0 take off, we'll have a healthy ecosystem of mobile operating systems to choose from with Google Android, Microsoft's Windows Mobile, iPhone and iPod Touch's OS X variant, and the Symbian platform used by Nokia. Since ALP 3.0 is a Linux-based system, it is open source, and joins Google's Android and the Symbian platform as open alternatives to the closed systems owned by Apple and Microsoft.
