Apple's Q4 2008 earnings call takeaways: iPhone outsells BlackBerry, possible Apple netbook
A whole group of conversations have sprung up overnight about yesterday's Apple earnings call, but no mention of the rumored demise of the Mac mini.

Initial reports about Apple's Q4 2008 earnings call from yesterday were simply about the increase in profit that Apple experienced. Today, however, there's quite a bit of discussion about Steve Jobs' presence on the call, as he popped on to discuss the state of the economy. This is notable because it was his first time on such a call since 2000. One of the big takeaways from Jobs was that due to over 6.9 million iPhone 3Gs sold, Apple passed RIM, makers of BlackBerry cellphones, in sales. Another comment by Jobs, downplaying the importance of netbooks in the marketplace, has John Markoff of the New York Times saying Read My Lips: Apple Is a Netbook Maker.
Additionally, although cancelled shipments of Mac minis to retailers had several sites discussing the possibility of an end to the Mac mini line of computers, the confirmation of this rumor that many were expecting from yesterday's call never occurred. Given Apple's history of product distribution, this could mean that the Mac mini will be getting another specs refresh soon, rather than being eliminated, but this is all idle conjecture at this point.
