The Sony Playstation 3 has a new firmware update now available, bringing the PS3 to firmware version 2.5. Firmware is a program tightly wedded to a specific hardware device, allowing manufacturers to provide some fundamental updates to a device without requiring the owner to purchase new hardware. The new update to the PS3 provides support for the official PS3 Bluetooth headset coming to North America sometime this fall for $50, Flash 9 support for the PS3 web browser, and power saving options in the system settings allowing the controller and the console or both to automagically shut down after a specified period of inactivity. Other updates in Firmware 2.5 include optional automatic shutdown after background downloads complete, more detailed friends list, and tweaks to the PlayStation Store and the PlayStation Network sign-up mechanism. Joystiq has a full run-down of the new features.
