FedEx delivered our new Apple laptop, the top of the line new MacBook with backlit keyboard, just before lunch. We carefully put together a whole slew of unboxing pictures that we've uploaded for your perusal. A few of them are embedded in this post, so take a look at them here, listen to our first impressions, and then jump over to our Apple MacBook 2008 product page's photo section to the see the rest.

Obsessable MacBook 2008 first impressions:

1. Apple was true to their word about cutting down on the boxing for the new MacBooks. This is one of the smallest Apple packages I've ever received an Apple computer in.

2. This newest MacBook looks gorgeous, feels extremely solid and well put together, and at 4.5lbs strikes us as extremely light and thin compared to the first generation white MacBook. It's actually so light, thin, and sleek, that there may be a chance that Apple has just knee-capped their sales of the more expensive and less-adequately powered MacBook Air.

3. The glass trackpad doesn't feel like glass. It has a very comfortable texture for a trackpad. The lack of a button, or rather, the entire trackpad being a button will definitely take some getting used to. As someone who is used to resting his thumbs on the button of a regular trackpad, I found the button to not always register my clicks at first, I suspect because I'm left-handed and my thumb on the right-side of the trackpad was registering as either a right-click or some sort of multi-touch gesture. This is all with the default out-of-the box settings, so this is most likely adjustable via Preferences and I doubt it will take me long to become accustomed to it.

4. Multi-touch four-fingered control of Expose to reveal all your windows, get to the desktop, or switch applications quickly is absolutely amazing.

5. The keyboard is nice and what we've come to expect from Apple MacBooks. Having the backlighting on the more expensive MacBook may alone be worth the extra money if you're one who often finds yourself typing in dark rooms.

6. The screen is shiny. Very shiny. When it's off it works as a very nice, dark mirror. However, it's not quite as shiny as some of the more headache inducing shiny laptop screens we've seen and the LED backlit screen is extra bright, vivid and sharp, so the reflection probably won't bother you unless you are easily bothered by such things or you happen to be in a lighting situation that is extra reflection prone.

7. The battery indicator on the left front side of the device is cool and useful and you don't notice it's there until you push the barely visible button.

Make sure you check out our Apple MacBook 2008 product page for full un-boxing pictures. We'll also have a full review of the device up after we've had some time to really run this sleek new laptop through various tests. However, so far, so good. If you already ordered one or are thinking of grabbing one soon, there's no warning signs to say that was a mistake. Obsessable first impressions are that this is a device worth obsessing over.

Sorry, Grant, but my wife hid my video camera from me and I didn't find it until after it was already unboxed. I will be doing a boot time, etc. video soon though.

Judith, you wouldn't like it, I think. The screen is probably too shiny for your tastes. Let me smudge it up for a year or so for you... ;-)

Ooo, shiny! It looks light, too. Lighter than my 2007 Macbook, which is now feeling very unspecial and smudgy.

CK you might be surprised to hear that the new gig got me a powerbook and I love it! I'm even running vista on it and not wanting to kill myself! Of course I got it last week so looks like im stuck with the old school for a while.

Sean, a Powerbook? You mean a MacBook Pro, right? VISTA?! Not even XP?

Sorry I mean the now old Macbook Pro. They preloaded vista for me otherwise i'd be all over XP. Ironically vista runs smoother on this laptop than I've ever seen on any PC.

Sean,
I agree. Vista works better on my Macbook Pro using boot camp than on any PC I've seen, even my husband's new Dell (which was made for Vista).
I just wish there was an easier way to restart in one or the other, I forget to hold the option key down. Wait..that's a user issue...nevermind.

no firewire??????? wtf. seriously apple. you just eliminated half ur market (audio/video/arts). i will never get one of these for that reason alone. and the macbook pros dont even have firewire 400 anymore????? wtf!!!!

Firewire ? Like Firewire 400? It has like no real world performance gains over USB for gods sake...

Well, to be fair, the one benefit of Firewire on OS X is that you can boot from an external Firewire drive, but you cannot boot from a USB drive.
