Manufacturer of stand-alone DVD rental kiosks DVDPlay announced a new pricing strategy, permanently lowering its daily rate to one dollar per disc. This move puts it in line with rival DVD kiosk company Redbox, which started out its business using DVDPlay-built machines, and has been offering dollar rates for some time. Redbox is now in over 6,700 locations, largely helped by its installations in McDonald's restaurants (the company owns 47% of Redbox) while DVDPlay runs only 1,400 kiosks nationwide. Hoping to draw customers to its machines, DVDPlay also announced that for a limited time, Blu-ray titles will be available for the same dollar-a-day rate. DVDPlay has offered the high definition discs since May, while Redbox has yet to widely carry the format.
