In addition to announcing the DSi, Nintendo also announced a special SD memory card that will allow gamers to directly load console content from the card. The new solution allows users to download content directly to the SD card, and use the content as if it were native Wii storage. Previously, gamers looking to free up console space could backup games and save data to the SD card, but couldn't use any of the said content from the SD card without copying it back into the Wii's internal storage -- a time intensive proposition. Nintendo says the cards will hit in Spring of 2009, and will come in sizes up to 2GB.

Why can't they just update the firmware to make it so you can run content off of existing cards?
