The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit found that telecommunications manufacturer Qualcomm had infringed on two of chip maker Broadcom's patents in its production of 3G WCDMA cellular chips. The patents in question describe a chip's ability to simultaneously participate on two networks using one transceiver along with allowing it to make calls over fixed or variable bandwidth networks, similar to a walkie talkie. A third patent, involving technology used for video compression on cell phones, was found to be invalid and therefore not infringed. As part of the ruling, an injunction against Qualcomm from selling chips with these technologies, first obtained in December 2007, was upheld, however Qualcomm will be allowed to sell certain chips with the patent infringements to pre-existing clients until January 2009.
