Nanoradio, a company who makes WiFi chipsets, announced its chipset will be used in the world's first 3G UMA phone, the Samsung P270, which can hand off calls between WiFi and 3G networks. UMA, short for Unlicensed Mobile Access, is a protocol that allows capable handsets to place and receive calls using WiFi over the internet, along with using traditional cell phone networks. Some phones and providers -- most notably T-Mobile's HotSpot@Home service -- have supported UMA, but Samsung's P270 would be the first handset to also feature 3G data connectivity. The phone will be launched on U.K. mobile provider Orange's network sometime next month.
