Car manufacturer Nissan has allied with phone developer Sharp and Japanese mobile giant NTT DOCOMO to develop phones capable of unlocking and starting cars supporting Nissan's Intelligent Key system. The system, available in many Nissan models since 2002, unlocks the vehicle's doors when a sensor detects that an encrypted signal from the authorized key fob is within range and, once the driver enters the vehicle, enables the ignition. In addition to automatic controls, the group will also include manual lock and unlock buttons on enabled phones. Phones supporting the technology are expected by 2009, though there's no word yet on specific models to be included, what the feature will add to the phones' cost, nor on if an American release is planned.
