LaCie has announced its 4big Quadra, a customizable Redundant Array of Independent Discs available in sizes up to 6TB -- the most capacious RAID system offered by the company. The 15.7-pound device employs four hard drives that can be configured to run in any of seven different RAID modes, from those emphasizing speed to those trading disk capacity for reliability. With RAID mode 5 support, as long as any three of the four drives are still working, the fourth can be rebuilt after a crash, but that security comes at the cost of 25% of the total array capacity. The device supports Macs and PCs with eSATA, FireWire, and USB 2.0 interfaces, and LaCie claims energy savings with a 34 watt idle mode and quieter operation compared to other RAID boxes. The 2TB, 4TB, and 6TB arrays are scheduled to be available on LaCie's web site in October, ranging from $850-$1,750.
