Sony Ericsson has officially confirmed an October release for its highly-anticipated Xperia X1 Windows Mobile smartphone, putting to rest rumors of a delay into next year that had been making the rounds at IFA in Berlin. A company spokesperson announced during a press conference in London that despite problems with "slightly jerky" video playback, the 3G slider is still on track for shipment early next month to the US, UK, and Germany. When it does get released, the X1 will be one of the most full-featured handsets on the market, offering up a full suite of connectivity options along with a high-resolution WVGA screen. It also incorporates a unique "Panel" platform which allows users to populate the screen with up to nine widget-like applications, and for which a software development kit has just been released -- opening the door to a host of third-party Panels.
