ASUS says it's embracing "green computing" with the announcement this week of its Bamboo Series of notebooks, with a real bamboo veneer covering most of the case. The Core 2 Duo-powered 12.1-inch model seems to be performance-geared with an NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS graphics chipset and WiMAX support, while the 11.1-inch model plays up reduced-power features like its ultra-low voltage Core 2 Duo U7600 CPU, low-consumption 1.8-inch hard drive, or available 32GB solid-state drive. Price points and release dates have yet to be revealed.

I think it is beautiful, and you could cut sushi on the cover.
The announcement makes a lot of claims about power efficiency as the reason that this and all of their current line of laptops is a Good Green alternative. Although they talk about bamboo as an eco friendly alternative material, I think it is mostly just symbolic.

Bamboo is a great wood for veneer. I had an extremely warp-resistant bamboo Post slide rule (what's that?) in college. But does this machine's veneer cover reduce the amount of metal used to make the case? Ah, there's the rub.

While I generally like bamboo products and appreciate that it's a renewable resource, this has that wood paneled station wagon feeling to me, which I can't say that I love.
