AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson is hinting that his company's exclusive distribution deal with Apple to sell the iPhone 3g at a subsidized price of $199 may extend until 2010. Stephenson says that brisk sales of the 3g--double over the original's sales levels--are helping to reposition AT&T from an old-fashioned telephone company into a major wireless player. In addition to purchasing the iPhone, customers must sign a two-year wireless contract at an average of $100 a month, thereby providing AT&T a sizable and consistent revenue stream. The company is said to be planning to offer an unsubsidized iPhone in the future at costs ranging from $599 to $699 with no required service contract.
