Originally released in Taiwan on October 16, 2007, the Asus Eee PC was arguably the first mini-notebook to popularize the netbook format of small, low-cost laptops primarily used for checking email, browsing the web, and basic word processing tasks. Available running either Xandros Linux or Windows XP, the Eee PC was originally introduced with a 900Mhz processor and a 7-inch screen capable of a 800x480 pixel resolution. The Asus Eee PC 4G and 2G Surf each came with a 4GB or 2GB respectively solid-state flash hard drive. The 4G Xandros Linux-based model originally sold for $399 and it quickly became popular amongst tech-hobbiests, tinkerers, and hackers looking to purchase a low cost device to modify. Due to the popularity of these light netbooks (every model runs under 4 pounds and the majority of the models run under 3 pounds), Asus has produced twelve different models, steadily increasing the screen size from seven inches to eight-point-nine inches to ten inches, while also increasing the processor speed and hard drive capacity . Every model to date has included a built-in webcam, WiFi connection, Ethernet port, and VGA out to support an external monitor. All models are currently avialable and the majority of the models and configurations are priced under $500.
