Google Chrome OS unveiled, released to open source community

Announced at WWDC 2009, the July 2009 renovation of Apple's 15-inch MacBook Pro laptop resembles its predecessors, with a focus on high-end but still battery-friendly system specifications, and the same black-and-silver unibody design introduced in 2008.

The 15-inch MacBook Pro is available now in three basic configurations. At $1,699, you'll get a 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, four gigabytes of RAM, 250 GB of hard drive space, and an integrated GeForce 9400M graphics chip. At $1,999 it's 2.66 GHz, a 320 GB hard drive, and both a GeForce 9400M chip and a more powerful GeForce 9600M GT discrete graphics card. Finally, the $2,299 model is similar to the $1,999 one, but with a 2.8 GHz processor and 500 GB of storage.

All three models feature an SD card slot, replacing the ExpressCard slot found in older models.

There are a few other changes compared to previous models. Most notably, it has the same high-power battery technology as 2009's 17-inch MacBook Pro, allegedly bringing the battery life up to seven hours from the five hours promised by previous models. Unfortunately, this battery is also unremovable without a trip to the Apple store. With 1,000 charges promised before it kicks the bucket, though, that might not be a problem for most users.

These new models also promise 60% better color gamut in their displays (still 1440 x 900 resolution and LED backlit), and are upgradeable to 8 GB of RAM, an honor previously reserved for the 17-inch MacBook Pros.
