The Slingbox products are media networking hubs that enable users to receive audio/video playing from home on whichever screen they happen to have handy elsewhere. The first Slingbox package to hit in 2005 only ran on Windows XP computers, but the Slingbox PRO-HD has expanded its compatibility as well as its video capability. With this new versatility, the unit takes a variety of inputs (including a DVR box, DVD player, and digital cable) and can stream HD video up to 1080i resolution to any place in the world the user can find to run a device with the Slingplayer software on a broadband connection.

The expanded list of ports to input video to the Slingbox include LAN, USB, IR, and paired input/output arrays for SD component audio/video, HD component audio/video, and S-video. As for output, compatible devices are computers that run Windows or Mac OS, and cell phones or PDAs that run Windows Mobile, Palm OS, or Symbian. Windows users also get DVR software as part of Slingplayer with up to 60 minutes of locally recorded video, as well as access to their TV's programming guide. The viewing software creates a graphic of the appropriate remote for the user's TV, DVR box, or DVD player.
