Jumping on the Netflix bandwagon, LG will be releasing a Netflix-enabled Blu-ray player this Fall for well under $500, the company says. Any Netflix customer with at least a $9 per month plan will be able to use the player to instantly play any of the 12,000 "Watch Now" titles offered, a small subset of the over 100,000 movies and shows in Netflix's library. Though Roku's Netflix-only player and the upcoming update to the Xbox 360 both offer identical functionality, this unit is capable of Blu-ray Disc playback and BD Profile 2.0 support for access to online and interactive features of upcoming Blu-ray Discs. It appears the system will also offer music and photo streaming given its ethernet-only connection, presumably via networked home computers.

This is LG's first attempt at another Blu-ray player since the BD200 HD-DVD/Blu-ray combo player (released just as HD-DVD was axed) and even at less than $500, it will likely feature stiff competition from Roku's Wi-Fi-capable $100 player, Sony's $500 Playstation 3 that offers Blu-ray, media streaming and gaming, and Microsoft's free Xbox 360 New Experience dashboard update this fall.
