Apple TV is a networked video playback device created by Apple that was originally introduced with a 40 GB hard-drive on March 31, 2007 and received a larger 160 GB version on May 31, 2007. On September 14th, 2009, Apple quietly removed the 40 GB model from its website and lowered the price of the 160GB model to $229.
The Apple TV's primary function is streaming media from networked computers running iTunes and displaying the media on a TV. The Apple TV can directly connect to the iTunes store and users can purchase rented movies, music and TV shows for download. The Apple TV can also stream YouTube clips from the provider's website, as well as play back H.264 video up to 1280 x720 on host machines.
The device connects to home networks via WiFi (802.11b/g/n) or standard Ethernet, and connects to TVs through an HDMI port or component video connections. The Apple TV can be controlled via a bundled infared Apple remote, using a networked computer's iTunes interface, or via the iPhone and iPod touch using Apple's official Remote application.
On October 29th, 2009, Apple updated the Apple TV software with support for the iTunes LP and iTunes Extras content that had been introduced to the iTunes Store a few weeks previously.
