We first set our eyes on this technology at CES 2009, and we were impressed with the sheer audacity of it. Toshiba's REGZA 55X1 employs the Cell processor (the same one found in Sony's PlayStation 3) to offer features you won't get on other TVs.
It can digitally upconvert 1080p to 2160p, display up to eight images simultaneously and swap through them without delay, and record up to eight channels at once to its 3-terabyte hard disk drive.
More traditional TV specs include a nearly unheard of 5,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 240Hz refresh, 1250cd/m² brightness, a built-in 7-speaker sound bar, DLNA support, web browsing via a version of Opera, and now-standard LED backlighting technology.
We're sure you're salivating by now, but you should know: the 55X1 has so far only been announced for Japan, where it will launch in December at ¥1,000,000 — more than $11,000.
